PENDLE HILL - Idyllic countryside, steeped in witchcraft and mystery
Newchurch-in-Pendle is a beautiful village at the foot of Pendle Hill and is the home of the famous "Witches Galore" shop, opposite to our holiday cottage in the village centre.
The whole area is steeped in history and folklore and was the centre of the infamous cull on witches during the 1600's, resulting in the well known witch trials at Lancaster Assizes. The book "Mist Over Pendle" describes Newchurch, the surrounding villages and its inhabitants at a period just before the witch trials. Many of the scenes referred to in the book are still similar to what they were in the 1600's.
A footpath up Pendle Hill begins within 30 yards of our cottage doorstep, and is part of the Pendle Way. Witches aside, the village and the whole area surrounding Pendle Hill is idyllicly beautiful in all seasons.
