PENDLE HILL :: Explore :: Pendle Hill
From all around the Pendle area Pendle Hill dominates the sky line. It is the only large hill around. Pendle Hill is the remains of a huge plateau of sedimentary rocks which lie over an ancient limestone bed. It is mostly made up of millstone grit.
Pendle Hill is carpeted in a thick blanket of peat which has formed from the decomposition of sphagnum moss. It provides a naturally rich habitat for bird, plant and animal life.
A path leads up Pendle Hill from right outside our cottage. The route up is very attractive, passing through a small forest and along a river and reservoir before taking in the relatively steep ascent to the plateau. The Pendle plateau is awe inspiring in any weather conditions; truly atmospheric in the mist and rain; in the sun there are extensive views in all directions.
